​QUIET CITY

A VIRTUAL EXHIBITION AT THE YUSTAYIN GALLERY, 2020

I've been looking at the plain, anonymous sides of houses and at the clean lines of buildings cutting into the sky. I tried to capture my first impression of them using a simple approach.

The pictures were started some time before Coronavirus caused cities across the world to assume a quieter aspect but the viewer may well notice an evocation of lockdown.

Aaron Copland wrote the incidental music for the play, Quiet City by Irwin Shaw in 1939. He later worked some of it into a ten-minute composition to be performed independently. It remains the perfect soundtrack to any quiet city.
